IN THE LATE 1970's, THE INCOMPARABLE GOLDEN AGE ARTIST AND PUBLISHER L.B. COLE OFFERED HIS PERSONAL COLLECTION OF GOLDEN AGE COVER PROOFS FOR SALE. This is one of the most impressive of all the proofs he had. As L.B. personally explained to our consignor, the cover proof was the best image the Golden Age printer could create, because if L.B. was happy with it, he would authorize the printing of the entire comic. If LBC was not happy, he refused to print the comic until corrections were made. In general, only one or two proofs were ever created. The ones saved by Mr. Cole are uniformly spectacular, with literally amazing cover colors. Importantly, anyone can tell a true cover proof because the inside cover was blank. The proof we are offering here is the first comic book use of the School-Day Romances title. The composition is exceptional, and the art superbly detailed.
CONDITION is virtually perfect. Len kept these very carefully, and our consignor has treasured it for decades. The cover colors are especially deep and brilliant. We grade it NEAR MINT-. SCANS: We are providing a high quality large scan so everyone can see how nice this is. A note on valuation: One can reasonably suggest that a unique cover proof in top condition is worth more than a regularly-printed version of the same comic. For those who are interested, though, top price guide value for just the printed comic book (not our unique proof) is $350.
